  • How many BTUs does a gallon of waste oil typically generate?

The number is approximately 160,000 - 240,000 BTUs scientifically. Heat output depends on the type and condition of the furnace and the type of oil being burnt.

  • Where can I get waste oil if I don't generate it?

If you do not generate waste oil, then waste oil is illegal to transport large volumes without proper permits. Check with state and local laws. Sometimes you can purchase oil from bulk oil distributors.

  • Does the heater produce smoke or a bad smell?

Waste oil furnaces burn clean. If your heater is producing smoke or smells funny, it will need to be serviced.

  • What are the maintenance requirements?

Refer to your owner’s manual for your specific unit. Burning oil will produce ash and will need to be cleaned every 600-800 hours of run time for the furnace. Oil filters should be cleaned at this time as well. Most of our customers have their furnaces serviced once or twice a year.

  • How much waste oil is needed each year?

It depends on the size, features and insulation of your building. A good rule is around 1/2-3/4 gallons of oil per square foot per year. A 5,000-square-foot shop should burn 2,500-3,750 gallons of oil each year.

  • Can I use a waste oil heater for my home?

Not for residential structures. Waste oil heaters are only UL listed for commercial and industrial use.
